Congratulations Bihar!

Bihar and Pataliputra (modern-day Patna) has one of the most glorious histories in the world. It has been 101 years since Bihar became a state of India. It is not in the distant past when Bihar’s name was uttered with negative connotations, and at times even derogatory. The socio-economic condition of Bihar became the example of a worst case scenario. However, it took only few years to change the face and the reputation of Bihar. Kudos to the government and the people of Bihar under the able leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, who powered a near miracle of sorts. There is a popular saying – if there is a will, there is a way. Bihar has found its way to better governance and better development after a long period of hopelessness. Even global icons like Bill Gates only have praise for the leadership and the state for its impressive achievements.

After a long wait, Bihar has finally built thousands of kilometers of tarred roads which have connected remote villages and towns with the rest of the country. Education and healthcare sectors have seen significant improvement in past few years., People till recently used to live under the fear of dreaded goons, where extortion was a parallel economy.

The present state government has been successful in allaying the fears of insecurity among the aam aadmi. Twin factors contributed to the success: Bihar has seen a hitherto unthinkable growth among all states of India, and clean governance and transparency.

During the 11th five -year plan (2007-12), Bihar has logged a record 11.95% growth. The World Bank has only praise for the state’s development. Bihar has a huge population below poverty level and per capita income for the state’s population has been one of the lowest. But a recent report shows that per capita income growth in the eastern Indian state also tops the country at a fast clip of 11.75%.

A major concern for Bihar in recent days is a high rate of population growth in the state (25.05 per cent decadal growth) which indicates of doubling the population by 2051. While the state will need more resources and infrastructure to provide all basic necessitates of life, it will have to plan ahead to avoid any slowdown or even a possible disaster. At the same time, through proper plan and execution, the working population can be converted from unskilled to skilled workers and Bihar can become source of huge supply of workers in all fields and thus making it a hub of several development projects. This is good news for the state since the government is focusing on manufacturing as the next big growth sector and as the new engine of growth..

Tourism sector has great scope to develop further. After all, Bihar is rich in history, and has unique tourism spots.

However, if planning is not done properly, situation can be disastrous – education, healthcare, water, sanitation, employment, energy, environment et al will be affected. People have faith in the current government and hopes are high that Bihar will remain an example of a growth rising from rock bottom to a level where people have plenty of opportunities for better quality of life .

There are huge investment, business, tourism and overall development opportunities in Bihar in this day and age. As Bihar celebrates Bihar Diwas, the 101st anniversary of its formation, one hopes that people of Indian origin everywhere, especially non-resident Biharis and others who want to see the state continue scripting the success tale and focus on its path of sustained development, will join hands for a better tomorrow. Congratulations Bihar!

For Tomorrow’s Lasting Peace

Who said we are in the 21st century? Who said we are more civilized than the medieval era of brutality? If we look at the violent incidents of the past year in different parts of the world, they would tell a tale of manmade calamities affecting lives of millions which in itself is evidence of a global village full of primitive inhabitants and leaders for whom the progress of the civilization seems regressive. In the name of religion, violence is found in so many countries! The jihad is more visible around the world now than even 10 years ago. This ...

Imagine India!

It appears that India has suddenly shaken off the stereotypical ‘caste, cows and curry’ image in all media and textbooks. The nation’s economy has touched a new high. It is now, almost third largest and militarily third most powerful. India has one of the largest educated middle class populations. That has made some people to call India, a super power. The potential is there, but what does being a super power mean? In the contemporary sense, power means economic and military power. This power could mean bullying and controlling world affairs, which is not the will of the people of ...

A New Era of Mahabharata

August 15 is celebrated in Delhi, the national capital of modern India and the Indraprastha of ancient India. Amid the never-ending whiff of corruption, inflation and economic growth, one wonders if the government has become irrelevant. It is collective strength of money power, business and power of information (and disinformation), which seems to be running the world. The scenes in Hastinapur and Indraprastha, depicted in the Mahabharata, has come back to haunt us. Actions of many world leaders, including in India, remind us of the Kaurava hero, Duryodhana. Asked whether he was aware of his misdeeds, he retorted, “I know ...

The Riddles of Indian Democracy

Is Indian democracy bracing for a change? The premise for the argument is the paradigm shift in power in various states like Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Naturally, hopes are high that the changes are to the heart’s content of the masses, who have been instrumental in the change of guard. It is well known now that credits for building many important pillars of our civilization such as the introduction of the number system was not clearly given to India till very recently. History reveals that though glory is given to Greece for the birth of democracy, albeit short lived ...

A tale of two cities

While celebrations of Ganesh festival takes off in Mumbai and Mumbaikars embrace a season of euphoria, which is expressed in million voices and in a million ways, the United Nations’ representatives from 192 countries prepare to come together in New York for hair-splitting discussions on various world affairs in the annual General Assembly meet. The Big Apple wears a festive look, thanks to the mélange of attires and potpourri of languages spoken by the delegates and heads of states. Perhaps Ganapati and the United Nations have something in common. Although Mumbai and Los Angeles are official sister cities since they ...

Emerging Bengal

The old and new are equally treasured by the people of Bengal, though many may argue about the dearth of new things Bengal can showcase to the world today. The old Howrah Bridge and Howrah Station next to the Bhagirathi (Ganga) river with boats and steamers crisscrossing belong to the old era. The siren and horns of the water vehicles as well as the trains and automotives resonate with the pilgrims’ chants on the ghats of Ganga. The new Vidyasagar Bridge gives a modern look to the landscape of this 300 year old city Kolkata which is the face of ...
