Trumped, but who?

From USA to Europe, the news is now filled with a somewhat sorry state that these societies, or some part of, are finding themselves in. Brexit, Italian polls, France, Germany, and the US elections of 2016, they all reflect the same excitement followed by a sorry state. Indian elections of 2014 also had the same phenomenon with a different outcome though. The trend is interesting but not surprising. It is not surprising because it is the culmination of the political system and of the manipulation of information that we have ourselves let evolve. People let their guards down and allowed ...

The Rise of the Right

Modern Nationalist leaders are on accent across the world and according to them, radical Islam is the fascism of today which world has to fight as one. Never before has an election in one country had such a polarising effect on the world politics. Never has the establishment in USA been so unequivocally and solidly backing a candidate. And yet, Hillary Clinton lost to Donald J Trump. The media was solidly backing her. Out of the 100 most circulated newspapers, 57 had openly endorsed her and another three had called for defeat of Trump. Hillary’s TV blitz, carried through bought advertisement ...

Do I want to be in PM Modi’s pocket?

Let me tell you the saga of my life. I’ve been kept in a wrapper for past few weeks by a family. Allow me to share with you the discussions I’ve heard from folks in this house. Ever since I’ve entered the house people are endlessly talking on one subject – ‘demonetization’. It’s a family of three generations: grandparents, parents and two children. Grandma praised recent demonetization and said – great job done by Modi.  All the people with black-money will have to pay the price of looting the country for so long. She liked the emergency in 1975 – ...

Silicon Valley Life: Winning, Losing – my intimate personal take

Us and Them For months I debated, dissuaded and deliberated on the US elections. Watched in awe, how this country went through the same rhetoric that marred the political scenario in India. Here in the Silicon Valley, we cater to a certain mindset of political correctness – much so, as we come from varied countries and cultures. We try to even it out by appreciating all that is new and unfamiliar – making them a part of our new life in a new land. Most of us, who live in the Valley, studied very hard all our lives, competed with ...

Is America ‘Great Again’?

Donald Trump the President-elect was welcomed by President Barack Obama at the White House today who said about him to be ‘unfit’ for the role and was propelled to the office by those who Senator Hillary Clinton called ‘deplorable’. History is made in America again after electing the first black President Obama in 2008. This time not for the first woman President of America but for Trump, who became President without being part of the political establishment and without ever holding any public office. And, who said democracy is the collective voice of people? America is deeply divided as it is ...

Has Huma Abedin become a liability for Hillary Clinton?

With just few days to go before the elections, the race for the Oval Office is getting more and more tight particularly after the recent email controversy. While political pundits and pollsters may be crunching numbers to determine which of the two candidates have the road towards the magic 270 electoral votes, what is significant to understand is that the fundamental nature of the electorate has not changed. United States of America today is lot more diverse and aligns with the ideals of the Democratic Party more than ever before. One just need to look at the numbers Obama was pulling through ...

India needs to think different – Part I

‘Boycott Chinese imports’ is the social media obsession this Diwali season. Recently SAARC and BRICS summits were making headlines both in regular media as well as social media. People are giving way too much importance to these groups than it deserves. One does not have to be an economist or geo-political strategist to figure that out, sometimes common sense is enough! While one should be a good neighbor, help each other out, yet we must ‘think globally and act locally’! In the era of globalization trade, security and prosperity do not have geographical boundaries. The boundaries are built in the ...

US Presidential Election & Indian Americans

Indian Americans generally heavily tilt towards the Democratic party. But this election is different. Many Indians in America think differently, and I’m one of them. So, the final debate is over. Now who should Indian Americans vote for and why? Let’s start with this news of Trump tops Twitter (a formidable medium) during third debate according to an independent website thehill.com: http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/301907-trump-tops-twitter-during-third-debate Media Integrity is a lifeblood of any democracy. But if we follow The Hill, it’s clear how the so-called establishment has shattered its own integrity by shielding Clintons and unleashing witch hunt against Trump: http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/media/301285-media-and-trump-bias-not-even-trying-to-hide-it-anymore. Confirmation bias can be powerful. ...
